Can Bankruptcy Affect Future Employment?

February 16th, 2010

Although it is illegal for an employer to base his hiring or not hiring you on your credit background, it somehow makes a difference in their final decision. This is particularly true if you are applying for a position in an accounting or payroll position. Another applicant with a clean record and no trace of personal bankruptcy may have an edge over you.

If the employer eventually asks for your credit history, remember to be honest and discuss how and why you went bankrupt. Is it because of a divorce, hospitalization and illness? Set the record straight and tell the employer what you are doing to remedy the problem.
