Do I Need a Shim Stock or a Feeler Gage?

December 31st, 2009

Many people think that they absolutely must have a shim stock to fill spaces. The truth of the matter is that if the shim stock would have been removed at some point in the manufacturing process, a feeler gage can actually be used in place of a shim stock. However, with the low cost of a shim stock, there usually isn’t any good reason not to purchase a selection of shim stocks, in varying sizes, as they are needed in your manufacturing process. Just remember that shim stocks are used as spacers, and feeler gauges are used to measure space. While feeler gauges can be used as spacers, shim stocks are not usually recommended for measuring spaces.
