Maintaining A Safe and Efficient Computer

I was joking when I was teasing my husband about my computer having issues ever since he decided to share computers with me. I have had the same computer now for well over 2 years and it has worked just fine for me. Since his latest computer went on the fritz he decided he will just create an account on my computer. Now I am having all kinds of problems. Is this a case where an antivirus firewall software download would help us protect our new network that we seem to have in the house? I need my computer to continue to work safely and efficiently.
