Appreciate White Wine through Colors and Scents
November 27th, 2011
Australian white wine actually offers a variety of hues, often ranging from bright gold to pale lemon yellow. The color usually indicates the region where the vintage comes from and the grape variety used for the fermentation. Cooler regions tend to produce light-colored wines, and light-skinned Rieslings are pale in comparison to Chardonnays. Your sampling’s color also hints of its taste; darker white wines tend to have more body than paler varieties. Of course, you’ll only get to appreciate the flavor once you sample it. Even white wine benefits from brief aeration, though. Swirl the glass a couple of times so you’ll get a whiff of the scent. Stronger bodies tend to have intense tannin scents.
