Cuboid Syndrome

March 15th, 2010

The cuboid is a smaller, however extremely important bone on the lateral side of the foot in between your heel bone and the fifth metatarsal bone. It’s an necessary bone because it provides a lever for the tendon of the muscle from the lower leg (peroneus longus) which passes beneath it on it’s route to the opposite aspect of the foot. The muscle is an extremely powerful muscle, so the cuboid bone has to be very steady if it is to become a powerful lever. If the bone moves for the duration of contraction of this tendon, then the joints around the bone get stretched, creating what is recognized as cuboid syndrome.
