Bangkok Dangerous: Working at Height

March 31st, 2010

Having spent a few days in Bangkok, I’m always surprised at how casually the local workforce take height safety.  I’ve seen guys painting a bridge with no fall arrest equipment at all – just a couple of ropes and a piece of wood to sit on.  Also, despite the big signs in English saying “Safety First” on the building sites, I see workers up high without any anchoring or self retracting lifelines – they’re simply holding onto supports to keep themselves from falling.

It makes me wonder how many accidents occur on such sites. I know in the UK, such construction sites would be shut down if they didn’t follow proper safety procedures.
